2022--Beer #5: Cherry Cheesecake Sour (Smuttynose Brewing Company)

Thank you to Melissa for providing Saturday's beer, Cherry Cheesecake Sour (5.5% ABV) from the Smuttynose Brewing Company. Cherry Cheesecake Sour is a Sour-Fruited beer brewed with wheat and oats mixed with lactose, cherry puree, and vanilla. Not to sound cheesy, but after a few of these, your cheeks will have a nice cherry hue. Smuttynose Brewing Company started out as in 1994, It has changed ownership several times over the years. In 2018 it landed in its current location of Towle Farm in Hampton, New Hampshire.

Appreciate beer of the day picture! Cherry Cheesecake can art is very nice, curious about what the otter represents? Label mentions ABV on the bottom, so we turn the can upside down and nothing but the Best By Date. But wait, looks like something is being hidden by the label. What sleuths we are – 5.5! Thankful today for our health and being able to exercise. Now for the tasting, we’re both leery of sours. Cherry smell on the nose, smells like sour, tastes more like a lemonade, very slight cherry taste. We’re not finding positives on this one – where’s the cheesecake? Our rating would be a 2.0, with the caveat our rating is more we don’t like sours and not a rating of how it compares to other sours.

Hope everyone is having a great Saturday! Let’s get right to it…a 2.6 out of 5 for Trey Butt on this one. When cracking the can and getting the initial smell, I assumed this one was gonna be a puckerer. The tart cherry smell had me preparing for what I was about to sip only to be somewhat let down with the lack of sourness to it. I definitely get the cherry and vanilla taste but it’s missing something to give it the cheesecake effect they’re looking for. I did enjoy the can artwork as it got me hungry for some sweets later on tonight. The highlight of the can is the faded seal in the background with a lil smirk to it (I believe that’s their brewery logo/mascot). This was interesting beer for sure but not something I’d particularly choose to drink casually or have more than one of. Cheers!!

Hello everyone! I do love the can, I love cheesecake! I’m not a big sour beer girl but I liked this one. It was a slight sour Cherry with a slight vanilla aftertaste. Nothing spectacular but really drinkable. I would give this a 3 out of 5. Cheers! I’m thankful to try new beers!

I’m a sour fan, so the fact that this particular “sour” lacks that punch is rather disappointing. A lot sweeter than expected. Tastes like juice. 2.75/5.

I’m thankful to be enjoying this beer with some family tonight! Usually not a sour fan at all due to severe acid reflux. To my surprise, this sour was more sweet! The cherry was subtle and the cheesecake gave the beer a creaminess similar to parsnip soup. I rate this a 3 out of 5. Happy Saturday and cheers all! 🍻🎄🎅

Another day of shopping success and winding down with cherry cheesecake “beer”, I feared the sour, but I was determined to do it! The tartness greeted me, the Vanilla eased in…I actually liked the flavor, the sour never came, (thank God). I successfully finished it! The can is quite classy for a brewery called Smuttynose! Not so artistic as photogenic! I feel I dodged a sour bullet, but hey, each beer offers a new challenge! I love this brewextraganda so far! 3.2/5 continue to enjoy this season!

Grateful for all of you during this Christmas season! For Mandon this was a 1.5/5. We are just not sour people. The can made me us excited but just wasn’t our cup of tea. We always love trying these beers but just aren’t up for the task. Appreciate another try at sours! Merry Christmas!

Cheesecake and beer!? Two of my favorite things in one! Surprised by the lack of sour bite but also kind of pleased since I’m not normally a sour fan. Love getting to try different styles of beer I don’t normally partake in! The subtle cheesecake added for nice flavor overall 3 out of 5.

Thanks Big Lyss for bringing a sour to this tasting panel! Heidi and Keith usually don't enjoy sours, never even buy them. We were both pleasantly surprised at how "un-sour" this sour beer actually was. Heidi says "definitely more sweet than sour, really like the cherry/vanilla flavor" but doesn't enjoy it enough to drink the whole thing. Keith is not a sour fan at all but did drink half of it. He says "this is not beer." Keith is thankful that there is not another sour in the 12 days of Christmas panel - hahaha! The good news is that SANTA COMES IN 7 DAYS!! :D
