2023--BEER #4: Coastal Evacuation (Cape May BREWING COMPANY)

Thank you Brandon for providing this Brewsday, I mean Tuesday beer to keep the week going! Coastal Evacuation (8% ABV) is a West Coast Double IPA brewed with loads of centennial hops and tinged with some orange citrus and honeydew melon. Straight from the Jersey Shore, a few of these 8 percenters may have you fist pumpin' the night away to some DJ Pauly D. Cape May Brewing Company was founded in 2011 and is located in Cape May, NJ. The brewery has a large taproom to enjoy a number of their beers and in the Summer months there is a relaxing outdoor Brewtanical Garden to sip the day away.

Well well well, day 4 of the Brewstavaganza brings us our first lil teeny tiny 12oz beer. That being said, what it lacks in stature it sure makes up for in flavor. The citrus and honeydew I think nailed the fruit notes on the head and surprisingly the more I drank it the more the fruitier notes came out. I think this beer meshes the two popular styles of a west coast IPA and a NE IPA (minus the haziness) perfectly. It is also a very drinkable IPA for it being a 8% which honestly came as a surprise. Coastal Evacuation is a witty name given the location of the brewery, and let me tell ya, I’d be grabbing a 12-pack of these bad boys if I was Cape May resident leaving for safety! With that being said, the can art was subpar and disappointing to me. With a cool name like Coastal Evacuation they really missed an opportunity to double down with some unique artwork…womp woooomp. As for a rating, this beers earns a 3.8 out 5 mugs when considering all factors. It’s an easy drinker but a heavy hitter which I look for in beers. Thank you Brandon, cheers everyone!! 🍻

Trey wanted them to have people getting sucked up by a Hurricane. Lol

Cape May was our last trip before having Boyd & I wasn’t able to taste the beers there so I was excited to try this! The can art wasn’t that fun but I absolutely loved this beer! I could really taste the honeydew melon and I could see this being in my fridge 9 times out of 10. Wish it was a 16 ouncer so I could enjoy more 😋 I give this a 4 on the mug scale!

I enjoyed this beer and I'll give it 4 mugs on the beer mug rating scale. I do enjoy more hops but it's a solid IPA and again, I'm happy to see another non-Hazy IPA. I actually think the can art is cool because of the food pairing suggestion of a hot dog and chicken leg while sitting in a lawn chair, as noted on the can. Cheers!

Cheers to beer #4 and another day of finding Tyler's beer of the day so cleverly displayed. I look forward to the displays as much as I enjoy the tastings so well done, Tyler, for another festive showing! I thought this beer was tasty and could see myself enjoying a few of these and then regretting it the next day because, well 8% - that's a lot for me. Flavor sure is hoppy IMO with a punch of citrus, yet crisp and refreshing finish. I enjoyed this one very much. Can art was cute!

Super happy with this pick as last year my pick was subpar to say the least. Loved the hoppy finish and nice smooth drinking of the DIPA. I will say the can art and beer name may be a little dark for Christmas but the taste made it worth the pick. Going to give this one a 4.2/5 and go get some more to throw in the fridge.

I’d have no problem hunkering down hiding out from a hurricane if the fridge was filled with these! Coastal evacuation was great in my opinion from the beer itself down to the cool name. It reminds me of an apocalypse movie how the can is framed like a poster warning to evacuate. The beer is very much my style, and I appreciate that the citrus isn’t too overpowering and a hint of hops is still detectable in the aftertaste. I also appreciate how it is a pretty smooth double. With all that said though, I do feel that the citrus is a litttttle bit too strong for me. I’ll give this one a 4.2/5. I’d def buy this to enjoy again. Good pick Brando :)

Loved the can and name as it is from Cape May, one of the best places at the Jersey shore! Tyler, loved your reference to Pauly D😁 I remember that note I left you and signed it the situation! Back to the beer, this was a good, solid IPA! It was very smooth for an 8%. This could be a good pool beer! I rate it 3.8 mugs🍻cheers!

This would be a very good beer during the summer months. To me it tasted a bit lighter than a normal DIPA, which I enjoyed. I could definitely drink a couple of theses. I would give this a 4.2/5 mug rating.

Not gonna lie…I didn’t drink last night’s beer after getting home late from a paint night, so I’m making up for lost time tonight 🤪 I was expecting a much rougher transition from an imperial brown ale straight to a double IPA. Surprisingly, the double was super smooth and easy to drink. I haven’t loved IPAs recently, but I actually really liked this one.

Cheers to two beers on a Tuesday 🍻

Good solid beer taste, the bonus being a double IPA. When this beer grows up to a full 16oz beer, it would stretch out the congested can art, and give it room, right now it looks like a soda can. These are definitely drinkable in abundance! I go with a 4.2/5 keep the IPA’s coming!

Sat down to enjoy this beer and was inspired to put on a little Hurricane by Luke Combs. The honeydew was a very forward flavor for me at first almost making it a bit floral. After a few sips in my chalice though I, like Trey mentioned, got a bit more of the sweeter fruit taste. Beautiful golden IPA color to the beer and I did enjoy the can art. Interestingly enough, the car on the can reminded of the Griswolds. Another solid selection for beer #4! I’ll give this a 4 on the mug scale! Cheers! 🍻 🎅

Well, a double IPA, very nice. The art work on can was good but not one of my favorites. The beer though was great. 8% is nice and the taste was great, could have a couple of these easily. I would rate this 4.2 bearded mugs out of 5.

Thankful for all who are participating so we can knock back some unique beverages. For transparency we are judging beers based on our personal tastes, not the style of beer. Speaking of the BEARDED BAKER BREWSTRAVAGANZA MUG SCALE, the values are integers. What’s with the fractions? One of our calculator geeks will soon be posting a rating of 3.1415926535.

Onto the beer – we’ve been slighted, our half pours aren’t as big as the first 3 tastings! Margie says nice amber color – I’m like what? Going to Google for the replay booth. I’ll be damned it matches Benjamin Moore golden amber. Can art is retro, not as scary as that Krampus figure from can #3 that scares children who misbehave. Seems like only two of us knew who Krampus was, so we know who misbehaved. This beer is like my college buddy from Cape May Courthouse – untrustworthy. Margie is feeling a residual tartness aftertaste. Ron is tasting the melon aftertaste, unfortunately my glass is empty for additional thoughts.

Margie beer rating = 3.75. Can’t follow the mug scale rule.
Ron beer rating = 3 (would have been 4 if a pounder)
